Do we as Catholics have the right to Judge? Adv. A.M. Sodder

Do we as Catholics have the right to Judge?

Time and again we as Catholics are told that we do not have a right to judge. Some of the common statements in this behalf which we hear  very often “ IS THAT PRIESTS SHOULD NOT BE CRITICIZED AS THEY ARE THE CHOSEN RACE”.

My question is that if this position is correct then why have Canon Law?

Do the religious themselves act as Judges?

Who judges which articles are to be published in the Examiner?

Who pronounces the judgement when marriages are annulled?

How come certain priests retire from administrative duties ( not religious duties) at 75 years  which is as per Canon Law  and certain favourites are allowed to continue even after 75 and even upto 92 years of age?

Who judges who is to become a Priest,  Episcopal Vicar, Bishop, Cardinal  or the Pope?

Who judges whether a person is to be made a saint or not?

Who judges whether a student is to be passed or failed?

Show me a single person who does not judge in his daily life be it the market place when buying fish or vegetable or the office ?

So if someone preaches and tells you  that “ WE SHOULD NEVER JUDGE”  then such a person is a liar because one cannot live on this earth without judging. A person who does not judge in my opinion will be called a fool.

For example If a man  goes to a shop and buys bananas which are soft , would’nt the lady in the house scold him for buying rotten bananas?

Would we buy short expiry goods for the price mentioned as the MRP?

The list can go on and on. The fact remains  that one cant live without judging.

Some of the best preachers do not practice what they preach.

A priest in charge was asked by the laity who called the police at Archbishops house , he claimed that they were not aware. The fact as revealed from the application made by me under the Right to Information Act ( RTI) showed that , that very priest had made a written application calling the police.

After a few months once again when he Association of Concerned Catholics who were called to Archbishops House as per newspaper reports after having gathered at Mount Marys Church , the police were called once again. This time too the Priest denied that they called the police. An application under the Right to Information Act was made by me and the reply given by the Police was that , the Complainant has asked them not to disclose his name. Two more RTI applications were made by me one asking for the letter where the complainant asked not to disclose his name and the second for a copy of the letter where the police informed the complainant ,that I had asked for the copy of the complainants  letter. Surprisingly the Police then gave me the information asked for in my first RTI where it showed that Police were called by the Church authorities and a false statement made that we were disrupting church services.

I think we, the laity and preachers should first change our lives. Merely preaching does not help. Some of the preachers are experts at telling lies and are smoother talkers than  con men. A few years ago while I was at Cross Maidan and clarifying a certain statement made by an Editor Priest and a Priest who has now become a Bishop, a person appeared with a collar and hear what I was saying and immediately told me you will get your clarification within a week. The said Priest who I came to know about later was a Professor at the Goregaon Seminary and is presently a Parish Priest in Malad West.Despite years having elapsed  I am still waiting,  for the clarification.

So in short people should stop preaching and the emphasis should be on practice and implementation.

Do not believe blindly what people tell you even if they are religious.

Some of the people who have the habit of spreading the “ Good News” as revealed to them,   without themselves verifying facts  are certain Eucharistic Ministers, Animators , Ushers , members of church groups etc. These people may not know you personally or may have never spoken to you  in your life, but will go about spreading the “ Good News”.One should check the backgrounds of these type of people and one will realize why they need to spread these “ Good News”.

Some of these so called stooges do not know that it is a grave liturgical abuse to refuse communion to a person who wants to receive communion  on his tongue kneeling even if it happens to be a Wednesday in St. Micheals Church, Mahim. The sad part is that such an announcement that communion would be refused  was made by a person who was a late Episcopal Vicar. It is sad that the nouvena is being given more importance than the mass.

Merely because a person is ousted from a Parish Council do not think that he has done a wrong thing. It is very easy to oust a person” who does not toe the line ” from most parish councils . A break up of that parish council will show that if you count the persons who have been co- opted  and add the priest members the number is definitely more than the elected persons.

Each time we spread the “ Good News” which in most cases is Gossip we are crucifying Jesus. Good Friday is being repeated and some of the worst offenders are the religious who are aided and abetted by these so called extra holy persons who do not hesitate to cheat their own blood brothers and sisters.

I once again make a statement that certain tenants in Marinagar who have already been rehoused once are being fraudulently rehoused again.

Gardens in Marinagar  which were sold to flat purchasers  as amenities are today resold and plans have been passed to build multi storied buildings despite being preached that we should protect our environment.

Any person who wishes to know more about any statement made by me about any person is requested to contact me and I will back up my statement with documentary evidence.

What does the Bible say?

Ezekiel 3 Verses 16 -20 states that if a person is doing wrong it is our duty to correct him otherwise that sin is on us.

Hence it is our duty to point out if something is wrong even if the said person/ wrongdoer is a religious . However we should do our ground work first collect evidence and then make statements . We should not follow some one blindly.

I also believe that religious in particular should be given a chance it the act committed involves another major. It is for this reason that when a priest gave me boarding passes and hotel bills of two priests who went to Goa for a week with  separate  woman, I did not expose them but instead I gave those documents to a Bishop to correct them since I believe it is a bad example to other priests.

Wish you all Blessed Easter .

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.
