Masses Can Now be said in Gymkhanas , homes and Open Places in Mumbai

On 3rd December 2014, Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana had their Gymkhana Mass in the open air,  side of the Gymkhana Premises. The said mass was con-celebrated by 5 priests and attended by one priest who sat in the First row. The Parish Priests who celebrated the mass were Fr. Gilbert D’lima Parish Priest of Orlem Church, Fr. Nerus Rodrigues Rector of the Mount Marys Basilica, Fr. Savio Desales- Priest at Victories Church Mahim , a priest  from St.Peters Church Bandra and one more priest.

Fr.Vernon Aguiar who is the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church and in whose jurisdiction the Gymkhana falls was sitting in the first row when the mass was celebrated.

My own parents who were both 80 plus were celebrating 60 years of marriage which is quite rare , in fact the priest who celebrated the mass and who was over sixty five years of age told us that it was the first diamond jubilee of a marriage which he was celebrating .We requested the then Parish Priest late Fr. Salvadore Rodrigues who was also an Episcopal Vicar to allow us to celebrate the mass on the terrace of the building , however he flatly refused saying that it was the policy of the Archdiocese  not to  allow such open air masses except community masses.

The laity of Mumbai must be also having similar experiences .

When I wrote to the Cardinal Oswald Gracias that how come two different policies are followed in the Archdiocese of Mumbai , he knew he had no answers and we were told that this Cardinal allows open air masses!!!  And what the then Parish Priest late Fr. Salvadore Rodrigues had done was wrong.

What is even more surprising is that none of the Church newspapers carried this news of open air masses being allowed.

About The Voice Of Bombay's Catholic Laity

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

One Response to Masses Can Now be said in Gymkhanas , homes and Open Places in Mumbai

  1. Hello Archie, If my memory serves me right, I do recall that this issue was taken up with our Dear cardinal when Karen, Joseph Floyd and myself met him and Bishop Agnelo some time in the last week of December 2014.
Oswald Cardinal Gracias acknowledged this and mentioned that he has made changes to this issue and has instructed his bishops and parish priest about the same. In other words Holy mass can now be said at homes, Catholic Societies, and institutes. I have briefed the laity in my parish about the same and have requested them to inform me should the same be refused. I have asked them to make an official application in writing at least 15 days before the event when time permits. The application must be addressed to the parish priest and should there be refusal the laity must ask for the same in writing. I will be willing to take this up with Oswald cardinal Gracias as he conformed the changes to us.
Of course many of our “Dharma Gurus” left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. This is the sad state of affairs at The Archdiocese of Bombay.
I have initiated an extract of your query and my response to enable laity at The archdiocese to be aware and informed . Those interested could query their respective parish priests in advance and keep the community at their parish informed.
