Marriage Hall Monopolies in Mumbai

We, are preached  that  persons living together without getting married in a Church, then the same means living in mortal sin, but do our churches encourage  marriages.

Today a number of churches give out open spaces to hold wedding receptions.Look around Mumbai and one will realise that every second church/ school  gives out its premises for weddings.

From the face of it nothing seems to be wrong but investigate deeper and one will realise that the hall/ open space is given to one person only or the hall is being booked by a booking clerk. That one person/booking clerk has created his monopoly . Investigate and you will be told that the said booking clerk is a poor person That one person may be a poor person but he forces you to do the decor from only one person Why?

He forces you to go to one particular caterer if he is not one Why?

He forces you to take the center piece and back drop from one person Why?

He forces you to pay a clean up fee of thousands of rupees to clean up when the cost may be just one thousand Why?

That poor jobless person who is now given a booking clerks job , now has a couple of cars, a few flats in Mumbai and his native place and can afford foreign trips.Yes he has made enough money from his share of monopoly kickback but he will still be referred to as poor.

Do you feel that the authorities are not aware?

No the authorities are definitely aware but why are they silent?

Are they also getting a kick back from the poor jobless booking clerk?

Why should catholics who are mostly working persons made to pay exorbitant rates when they can avail of much cheaper options?

Why are monopolies created? Why just one caterer/ decorator/etc?

Are we encouraging our young people to get married in the Church and have Catholic receptions?

Has profit become the sole aim of these institutions?

Are institutions built with the funds contributed by these same very persons who volunteered their time and energies during their young days  in order to ensure that the very same institution is built by selling tickets for fairs, advertisements etc all gone to vain?

Are these the values which we have imparted?

Go around ask young people who are getting married if what is stated is true or false and you will know the correct position.

If things don’t change more and more people will opt for quiet civil marriages and I think the religious will have to blame themselves for  this sorry mess and yes more people will leave the church .

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

  1. Who is this clever person who has attempted to blow the lid off this ” everyone knows ” scam/blackmail ???
I have made a few calls, and have found out that all that is said, is not entirely correctly portrayed. There may be one or two instances where the “poor” ?? clerk sort of influences decisions; but by and large it is the boss man/woman who issues the diktat as to which caterer, sound guy, decorator, etc. can or cannot be hired for services to be rendered for a function to be held at a particular venue.
The justification, as I have been told, is that these service providers have proved there ‘bonafides’, particularly the caterers, who normally leave behind a big mess of garbage after the function. I have been told that most venues hold a sort of “performance guarantee” deposit from the approved caterers, so that the mess is definitely cleared up after the function; this makes a lot of sense, since no venue would like to see their place in a mess the morning after.
That a commission/approval fee is paid to those that matter, when granting approval is probably a fact of life, and happens everywhere.
If the author of this article can show more lucid/concrete details, such as names and details of the venues, it will be a service to those availing of these venues.

  2. Very very true. Here is another ecxample of sacred Heart Church Santa Cruz Mumbai.
They have three school halls and two were given out for weddings. There was a administrator and
This is true, very true.So I decided to experience it myself.I approached the parish office and made a bookings for one of the halls in the year 2002,
A office staff who would take your details and by the time you readed home calles from caterers and decorators kept pouring in.I so decided to beat the system, so I made a tentative bookings some time ago (2002) and then the calls came rolling in.I called the caterers and decorators and soon was able to expose that the office staff got a 10 % cut on catering and 8% cut on decorators(tables/Chairs/Lights).In fact the decorator is still the one that does a lot of church work in the Archdiocese till today.I am not sure who is getting the commission today. In fact when the Sacred Heart issue reached a heat, all weddings were stopped even upto today and the office staff was not seen again. Its said there is big, very big money in religion and religious activities.May be the past parish priests of the parish will throw more light, unless they hold back for fear of being victimised by the Archdoicese administration “daddies’.
I am open to a dialogue and ready to expose with names, Any Takers.

Shameful, we have so much of corruption in the administration of Our catholic Church.
I invite response and those that disagree to a open debate. Any Takers????

  3. Cedric Vaz says:

Hasn’t this been going on for years? The Church will turn a blind eye to all this as long as “they get their cut” ! Silence is “golden” here as it only helps fill their coffers ……..

    • The administration of the catholic church is in a mess. Greed seems to be the main cause. A lot of authority without any accountability. Nepotism is at its height. Its time and I believe the time has come that the people now stand up and demand accountability and ask questions. Of course there will continue to be some who prefer to pussy foot around the helms of the clergy frocks for their own benefit, yet we must continue our struggle to find the truth.

  4. Hey Gordon, all this venting of spleen really makes no sense in the present context, since we all know that the boss man of the Archdiocese is not going to do anything about all the corruption and rot that is a fact of life in the handling of the Church’s financial affairs. Most of the ” Gocchi” goes on where there are the secular/diocesan clergy in power. As I have written many times, let us make a signature campaign (real signatures and names, not this electronic nonsense) and send it directly to Pope Francis. I am sure there will be some action to rectify the mess from the Pope. I am ready to be the first signature. Think about it. Is this the legacy we want to leave for generations to come, where the clergy runs amok with the money matters ?????

  5. Absolutely correct with the fast changing world many concepts are also changing. We dont oppose change but it should be for the benefit of all and not limited to the welfare of a few. Especially the social events and their venues should not be commercialized for gods sake.
