Yoga is a compulsory subject for students of a Catholic college in the Archdiocese of Bombay; Brahmakumaris are their gurus

Over the years, I have received a number of letters from priests, Indian as well as non-Indian, who condemn the Hindu/New Age spiritual discipline of yoga which is endemic in the Indian Church, promoted openly and aggressively by Catholic media, Catholic institutions, priests, bishops and even Cardinals in open defiance of the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as two Vatican documents published fourteen years apart.

These letters from priests as well as scores of articles written by eminent Catholics have been published in a number of reports and articles at the ministry’s web site [a list is provided at the bottom of this report].

Another compilation of hundreds of more-recent articles exposing the spiritual dangers of any form of yoga is being prepared for release.

What then was the need for me to prepare this intermediate report? There were three reasons.

I. I learnt that a Catholic college in Bombay archdiocese has made yoga compulsory for its students, giving no provision for conscientious and faithful Catholic objectors to opt for an alternative activity and thus avoid exposure to the Hindu spiritual discipline. They are also subject to indoctrination by theBrahmakumaris.

II. I received a letter from a priest forwarding a recent article written by prominent anti-New Age crusader Susan Brinkmann citing a senior Orthodox Church cleric who, in an official Encyclical, declares unequivocally that yoga as an exercise cannot be separated from its Hindu “religious content and background“.

III. One Prakash Lasrado wrote several letters to around 100 people including the Bombay Cardinal and the bishops of Bombay, the Pro Nuncio and me almost two months ago denouncing my Church-supported stand that yoga may not be practised by Catholics and instead insisting that “yoga minus Hindu philosophy/theology” [as if there is such a thing] is wholly acceptable and beneficial.

In the following pages, I reproduce the relevant information against the above three sections, along with my comments.

St Francis Institute of Management & Research (SFIMAR) was established in 2002 by the Society of the Congregation of Franciscan Brothers. [The Institute is AICTE-approved –Michael]

Stress Management & Physical Fitness

SFIMAR ensures that its students are fit enough to fight the challenges they face. Students are provided enough opportunities to build on their physical fitness and embark on the healthier path. Aerobics, Yoga & Meditation are also dedicatedly followed in campus. Also Stress Management sessions by the Brahmakumaris* are conducted regularly at SFIMAR. *See page 14

Some of the staff are compromised, experience in yoga being boasted of among their “qualifications”:

About The Voice Of Bombay's Catholic Laity

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

This must be brought to the notice of the Holy Father. Card Oswald and prev guy Card. Dias introduced all this rot in Mumbai.

  2. Francis Lobo says:

According to Wikipedia Brahmakumaris is a is a secretive, renunciate, millenarian, new religious movement of Indian origin.
    Their Core Beliefs are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahma_Kumaris_Beliefs
    1) The human is not a body but an eternal soul that lives in the body for the time being and is reincarnated from one body to another body. The soul is called “Atma” and is in the center of the forehead. This is where the ‘infinitesimal small point of spiritual light energy’ of the body is said to be.
    2) It is believed that the Supreme Soul God Shiva is personally guiding and teaching the Brahma Kumaris.

Archdiocese should clarify how Brahma Kumaris teachings are compatible with Christianity.

    • Bet on my last Rupee, the church administration will duck for cover and never respond. This is a unique strategy they follow.
May be they dont know what to respond.

  3. What has the official spokesperson of The Archdiocese of Bombay to say?. Just in case he/she is busy can Our dear cardinal, Oswald Gracias inform his flock of sheep. The shepherd must take the lead. After all he is one of the chosen advisers of The Holy Father pope Francis.
The religious issues are getting very confusing, and the flock are quickly leaving in dispair and disgust, as there seems to be no leadership.

It is the spirituality of the thick skinned to become more. I will not be surprised if I hear that our Cardinal has already recommended yoga to the Pope too.

  5. ralphpaulcoelho says:

Superficially yoga is a set of exercises that attacks the tensions in different parts of the body to minimise the distraction they cause as one tries to attain an emptiness that will allow the easy entry of the spirit of God. Relaxation of the body is followed by emptying the mind of distraction by focussing it on a single activity like ones breath. This is the ideal stage to meditate. Tony D’mello said that what enters into the mind in this state is God. He apparently forgot the parable of the woman who was freed from a devil and because she did nothing seven devils worse that the first took possession.

When Yoga is taught by Hindus it is natural that will use Hindu subjects to direct the meditation. Some secular teachers content themselves with advising you to “think good thoughts”. A Catholic priest who teaches Yoga tells of Gospel them to guide the intending yogis.

The school authorities are negligent in not understanding the two different dimensions of yoga. This is unfortunately true of many extra-curricular activities that are contracted to eternal faculty. They surrender to so-called experts in a practice but significant fail in their duty as educators. My own experience as an educator in Family life – part of the apparently defunct Remote Preparation for Marriage, was that very few Principals were interested in knowing the content and even less in considering why it was part of their role as educators.

Sadly this extends to the upper levels of the hierarchy who are particularly responsible to ensure that no Catholic institutions teach anything endangering the faith belief. The buck stops with the Bishop of the Diocese.
