St.Michaels Church Mahim refuses Communion to a Kneeler Has Jesus Christ been insulted?

June 22nd 2013 will go down as a very sad day in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Mumbai as in my opinion Jesus has been insulted.

One of the persons who came for the 6 am  mass and  knelt down to receive communion was refused communion by an Assistant Parish Priest Fr.Blaise and told that he would receive Jesus only if he stood up.

Incidentantly our last Pope Benedict XVI used to give communion only to those persons who knelt down and received it on the tongue.

Mr.Dominic Fernandes a daily mass goer and a resident of Mahim for many decades who was also in the line then told the priest that what he has done is totally wrong and is not acceptable. He was then taken away by an usher  Mr.Tim.

The said complete incident was witnessed by the new Parish Priest Fr.Simon Borges who was standing at the side of Fr.Blaise and also distributing Holy Communion. He too did nothing.

After the mass and novena got over the said usher Mr.Tim was confronted by many catholic daily mass goers and his explanation for communion to be given to only standees was that it flies away.He also spoke about Canon Law.

What could be the reason for the Church authorities refusing to give communion to a kneeler?

Does it take extra time?

Has the mass got less relevance to the Church authorities as compared to the nouvena?

Some years ago during  the last stint of  late Fr.Salvadore Rodrigues when he had just taken over as Parish Priest of the same church ,  he had also made announcements that communion would not be given to any person who kneels.

It is a pity that such was the stand taken by person who was the Epistocal Vicar of the Mumbai Church.

How many priests have  got guts to refuse communion to persons who are not properly dressed?

Yes Jesus is being persecuted and will continue to be persecuted not by outsiders but by insiders.

It is high time that the religious come out openly against their fellow brothers for doing these type of acts as more and more people may leave the church or wil be a case of turning the blind eye.

  1. What has the office of The archbishop of Bombay and/or its spokesperson to say about this incident.
What is the views of Our Dear cardinal Oswald Gracias.
Have sent a copy of the same to The Holy Father for his feedback on the same.

Can the people please give their feedback on this issue

  2. Mr Dominic Fernandes should have slipped a 100 rupee note into the priest’s hand and then the attitude would have changed

  3. Ladislaus L D'Souza says:

O well! We do have eccentrics on both sides of the fence that earmarks the great Clergy-Laity divide! Not many years ago, on the occasion of the Silver Anniversary of Cardinal Valerian Gracias’ death, I attended the Requiem Mass for his soul at the Cathedral. When I went up to receive Holy COmmunion, the priest giving the sacred host to those in my queue was one Father Anthohy S. D’Souza who brusquely pushed my hand away in order to place the communion on my tongue instead of in my hand. Being an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion [EMHC] myself, I reverently re-positioned my hand to accept the house. Once again, he replaced the host in the ciborium, pushed both my hands down and, before I could even react, pushed the host into my mouth which I had opened to protest against his action. All this with Cardinals, bishops and clergy around in full strength. Tbhe reverend padre has passed away – may his soul rest in peace! – but, to this day, I’ve not yet fathomed why he did that and can see no logical explanation either.
Hugh would have probably handled the Saint Michael’s episode differently. Until he came to Orlem, the EMHC in Orlem wore a robe that appeared to be a cross between a cassock, an alb and a karate champ’s outfit! Hugh changed that to a simple white stole emblazoned with a red cross. At that time, when the numbers of EMHCs was smaller, there was one EMHC who insisted on kneeling to received communion on his tongue. Hugh politely asked him: “If you cannot take the Sacred Host in your hand to received it, how can you touch it to give communion to others?” No answer. “Make up your mind – if you wish to continue in the ministry, you will have to learn to receive the host in your hand, standing.
One communicant would come with a veil covering her head and kneel to receive communion on her tongue from me. But the garb she wore consisted of the tightest jeans and tops ever seen!
So you see, eccentricity knows no bounds! And without such eccentrics life would be less colourful! Besides, with no clear-cut guidelines coming from anywhere whatsoever, one must learn to endure what one cannot cure! Further, one must learn to be practical – given the crowds attending our Church services, if everyone were to adopt the kneeling posture. we could have the distribution of Holy Communion alone lasting not less than an hour.

    • Andrea says:

We were taught to pay reference to the host. I remember when I attended my Communion Classes I was taught to kneel down and receive the body of our Lord. We had to cover our head. Late Rev. Fr. Hugh A Fonseca had taught is this. Later when he saw the kids receiving communion for the first time he had said that the kids need not wear a veil if their mothers do not wear one. But he always made the laity receive communion directly ion our tongue.

“But he always made the laity receive communion directly ion our tongue.”
Hey Andy! I think there’s a mistake here! I interacted with Hugh as Eucharistic Minister and remember him saying that the best way to motivate people to receive the sacred host in their hand is to refer to the feeding aspect involved in the placing of the host on the tongue by someone other than by oneself. Accordingly, he used to encourage Eucharistic Ministers to gently coax children coming forward to receive communion to do so in their hand and then place it on their tongue. Hugh was a very practical minded administrator and a down-to-earth priest. He should have lived really LONG – pity he’s gone so soon!

  4. It is very sad that
Priest should resort to this. Refusing to give Holy Communion to a person who kneels to receive the The Holy Eucharist ? They are supposed to be Shepherds of their flock, and , any, act of reverence should be respected. It is sad that these days one does not know the difference between Reverence, Devotion, and Worship.Wwhen this come from our Spiritual Leaders it is really a Sad day. Did Our Lord Himself not mention White Walled Sepulchres ? or Do we have Pharisees and Scribes , waiting to pull down the simple faith of ordinary people. A very sad day indeed.

  5. John Menezes says:

The New Mass is a Protestant Communion Service – Google and read “The Ottaviani Intervention.”. From April 6, 1969 the ordination rites were drastically revised to no longer empower the ordinand to bless, to hear and forgive sins, and to change bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Just as a man cannot have collective wives, the True Mass cannot have a collectivist presence of concelebrants as it denies the “Person of Christ” celebration of the Mass, i.e., its sacrificial intent.
While the Traditional Mass embraced the “theology of sacrifice,” the New Mass embraces the “theology of assembly,” i.e., it is not a Catholic Mass at all – watch the video at:
One has to kneel and receive the Body of Christ with the Communion Plate below the chin at the Traditional (True) Mass but at the Vatican II New Mass it is just idolatry as it is not a Mass at all.
We were forewarned of the coming chastisement by Pope Pius XII in “Mediator Dei” (20/11/1947) where he has already repudiated various abuses such as concelebration and others which have found expression in the New Mass, as well as The Resurrefix (Risen Christ on the Cross).
An online search gives ample pictures of Benedict XVI giving communion in the hand.
We have lost the Mass as foretold in the Book of Daniel as of end times, and we have to accept it. We are in End Times.
    John Menezes

  6. Who is the authority on Canon law Mr Tim? Secondly its mentioned that the host flies away, why has St Michael’s church done away with the paten while distribution Holy Communion? How come The Archdiocese spokesperson is yet to make a public statement on this issue, or are they all huddled and have decided to remain silent like they normally do.
Of course Our Dear cardinal’s advise was the one needs to be ‘Thick Skinned” yet let it be known we the laity and the people will ensure we shout from the top of the roof on the administration shortcomings.
The arrogance, of the administration will be put to an end, soon.

  10. Antonette Lobo says:
