Vatican Accepts Bishop Isidore Fernandes Resignation

Are we the catholics being given selective news by catholic newspapers ?
Not a single newspaper which claims to be catholic , has published an article  which  shows how a sitting catholic bishop of Allahabad consecrates a bishop who was not catholic?
What could be the reason for this blackout?
Any way the said Bishop’s resignation has now been accepted .The person who has been instumental in making this news public is Mr.Michael Prabhu from Chennai who is one of the few catholics who has the guts to call a spade a spade .We pray for Michael and his ministry.

Consecration & Installation Ceremony of Bishop Yeshu Darbar Most Rev. Prof. Dr. Rajendra B. Lal

The ‘Yeshu Darbar’ had a small beginning as Gospel and Plough. A group of six people used to gather for prayer in 1994 at the home of Prof. R.B. Lal. It was a period of turbulence in the life of the then Allahabad Agricultural Institute. In 1996 the group to be fifty and used to meet every Saturday at 5:00pm at Chapel of Brotherly Love and Prayer for healing was offered by him. In 2001 the Sunday Prayer was witnessed by four five hundred people in the Chapel. People began to come in large number to hear the word of God and be healed. Hence the venue shifted. In April 2001 former Chancellor of SHIATS (Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture Science & Technology) University anointed Rev. Fr. Prof. Rajendra B. Lal in recognizing his divine calling. The General House Meeting of the Yeshu Darbar held on 18th July 2012 under the chairmanship of the Chancellor Rev. Dr. J.A. To the best of my knowledge, this story was not reported in any leading Catholic magazine or internet media.

I understand from a reliable source that

1. Bishop Isidore Fernandes is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

2. Rome has instituted an inquiry into the matter of the “consecration and installation”.

However, I trust that other Catholic media will pick up this story and bring it to the attention of the Apostolic Nuncio to India as well as to the Holy See in case they are as yet unaware of it.

  1. Croydon. says:

Great Job Mr.Prabhu for informing us laity about such important happenings. Unfortunately, UCAN, Examiner and all other so called Catholic newsletters are busy publishing articles about lighting diyas and ordaining women as priests, Laitytude is the only sincere blog to carry articles that are necessary for our Faith today.
I also hope that our Mumbai bishops are aware that it could be their turn next.

  2. William K. says:

Should Vatican should invoke Can 401 # 2 in Mumbai too for the grave reasons exposed by the AOCC ?

  3. Ralph Coelho Yahoo says:

    Does anyone announce a divorce?

  4. Why will thy wish to say, and announce. The idea is to sweep the issue under the carpet. The Holy Father has done the right thing.I only pray that the Holy Father will initiate a closer and deeper look into the administration of the catholic church in India, where there are alleged claims of financial and property irregularities.
Its shameful of course, yet is it not better to clean all the dirty linen and start afresh?. May be the Indian press needs to bring this to light as our catholic news magazines will never allow the truth to be known to the laity.

  5. andrea says:

    Thanks Mr. Michael Prabhu
This shows that never really took an active part in our religious home. We just went there for mass as it was an obligation and it was instilled in us to go to church on Sunday and other days of obligations. We never really took interest in seeing what really was the true story. We were taught to respect priest………..yes I still do respect them very much as I was educated under the guidance of a few good ones. May their soul rest in eternal peace.

  6. George Castelino says:

Unfortunate turn of events to an otherwise life of dedication and sacrifice. Shows our priests and bishops are after all human beings and prone to errors of judgement, They need our prayers. Vatican went by the Canon law as it must. Let the merciful God be the judge.

    • Does the offence fall in Graviora delicata?
      Kinds of Liturgical Abuses

Redemptionis Sacramentum speaks of three classes of liturgical abuses. 1) graviora delicata (the most grave crimes), 2) grave matters and 3) other abuses (i.e. lesser matters). Please note that indented material are direct quotes from the document, along with footnotes and referenced documents, in some cases. Otherwise, the comentary is my own.

      1. Graviora Delicta. The most grave kind of liturgical abuses are graviora delicta and are reserved to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Each will be treated separated.

[172.] Graviora delicta against the sanctity of the Most August Sacrifice and Sacrament of the Eucharist are to be handled in accordance with the ‘Norms concerning graviora delicta reserved to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’,[280] namely:

      a) taking away or retaining the consecrated species for sacrilegious ends, or the throwing them away;[281]

      b) the attempted celebration of the liturgical action of the Eucharistic Sacrifice or the simulation of the same;[282]

      c) the forbidden concelebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice with ministers of Ecclesial Communities that do not have the apostolic succession nor acknowledge the sacramental dignity of priestly Ordination;[283]

      d) the consecration for sacrilegious ends of one matter without the other in the celebration of the Eucharist or even of both outside the celebration of the Eucharist.[284]

      • Galbano Dsouza says:

While these norms pertains to the delict’s concerning the sacraments, there are other kinds of Graviora Delicta too which pertains to morals (the various kinds of sexual abuse, especially of minors) and those concerning matters of Faith such as heresy, apostasy, and Schism

The CDF can even initiate an inquiry against a high ranking member of the heirarchy for such violations of crimes, even if it be the Cardinal.

  7. judith monteiro says:

It is not the case of gloating but when someone speaks up & stands for the Truth be it exposing the truth, they should be appreciated. Hence, Thank You Mr Michael Prabhu . Thanks is also due to the Vatican for initiating an inquiry & acting truthfully on the findings of the same

Correct me if I am wrong, but I understand that the Bishop has resigned, he hasnt been excommunicated. Hence it is a “Resignation from a Post / Office”, not a “Divorce from the Church / as a Priest”

Any Institute / organisation always declares new postings or resignations esp of people of importance, it would only be right to announce this developement too

At a time when the Vatican & Church at large is receiving flak for ignoring issues, this will only prove that the Vatican is acting & will also serve as a deterent / warning to the laity & religious because of whose actions the Church & Catholicism is getting a bad name

  8. pietro says:

Has the pro nuncio woken up from his sleep? How come action? How come the issue was not swept under the carpet????????????????????

    • He better wake up, has been sleeping for too long.It is also could be the reason that The Holy Father has cracked the whip. We must continue to keep the Holy father informed of the happenings in India .

  9. I see no reason why the CBCI and or The Apostolic Nuncio, cannot make a public statement on this issue to ensure this issue does not go out of hand.
The Catholic news letters and magazines need also to comment.
The local Archbishops need to ensure that a notice on the issue is read tomorrow Sunday at all masses.
The continued silence is causing more damage than good.
I hope the catholic church will see the light of day.

  10. There is much more to this than what we see, and has been reported. I find it hard to believe that a bishop of his status could make this gross religion blunder, and bring shame to the catholic community, to the extend that The Pope himself “accepts” his resignation.
Is there another force working in the catholic church.
    Remember what was said.!!!!!!!!!
“The smoke of Satan has entered the thresholds of the catholic Church”
Let us pray to Our Mother Mary, and her son Jesus Christ to expel this smoke.

    • My thoughts were also focused on this issue. Is there another force work in in the Catholic church, We have the issue of women priests supported by some senior clergy members, we have alleged financial corruption, we have issues where the parish priest and bishops disobey the cardinal, we have so ,so many issues where there seems to be a third force at work.
WE need to unite and drive away those who are bringing down the church. Some say we activists are to be blamed, yes I agree we must be blamed for saving the church.
Let us join hands and remove those who are the third force even if it be selected anointed ones.

  11. Francis S. Lobo says:

    Hindustan Times (Lucknow)

ALLAHABAD: Bishop of Allahabad diocese, Rt Rev Isidore Fernandes, has tendered his resignation from his post. As per reports, Bishop Fernandes’s resignation for non-specified reasons has been accepted by Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican City in accordance with Canon Law 401 and 402 on January 31.

As per information made available on official website of Catholics Bishops’ Conference of India, Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Ignatius Menezes, bishop emeritus of Ajmer, as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Allahabad on January 31.

Senior officials of Allahabad diocese said on condition of anonymity that after the resignation was accepted by the Pope on Thursday afternoon, archbishop of Agra diocese, Most Rev Albert D’souza, arrived in Allahabad on Thursday night to hand over charge to Bishop Ignatius Menezes. On Friday, D’souza handed over charge to Menezes. Canon Law 401 and 402 states that due to a serious medical impairment or some other grave reason a bishop can offer to resign.

  12. Fr. Antony Rodrigues says:

Everything has its own time. At the right time the acceptance of Bp. Isidore Fernandes’ resignation has come. It shows that punishment is inevitable …

    • Fr Anthony, can you comment on my views of the third force. I also believe that this third force could include, selected priests, nuns, bishops and even cardinals.. As a annointed man of God, please throw some unbiased feedback. Thanks

  13. Stanley Machado says:

St.Peter too was caught on the wrong foot when he publicly denied Christ. But, the Lord exalted him to be the First Pope. God’s ways are higher than human ways. This may be a time of humbling for Bishop Isidore, but let us not forget what he has done for the diocese in his last 25 years as Bishop.

Bishop Isidore’s has been a life of obedience and sacrifice. Having joined the Seminary as a young boy of 15, he passionately served in the diocese of Allahabad for almost half a century.

From among the zillion works of charity and mercy he performed, such as building churches & mission stations in rural areas, hospitals for the poor and marginalised, educations institutions for the underprivileged, old age homes for senior citizens and on a personal level, reaching out to orphans, widows and the lesser fortunate, this one error of judgement cannot wipe away what his life of prayer & service meant to the diocese, its priests, laity and most importantly to the Kingdom of God.

God has wonderful ways to humble and exalt, and only He is the perfect judge !

    • Yes Stanley God does have wonderful ways to humble and exalt. The question is if we see a thief in our daily life do we leave and say let God be the judge or do we need to take corrective action? or Do we our best and God will take care of the rest.

    • Peter was a simple fisherman. He cannot be compared to Bishop Isidore who is an educated person.
Peter was the most trusted apostle of Jesus and had no idea of a third force.
Have you heard of Bishops supporting women priests? I can send you some info.
Lets pray that those who stand up to clean the system will be showered with the grace and blessing to continue their work against evil.

      • Stanley Machado says:

Whether Peter was a fisherman or not, it was him that Christ chose to lead the Church, even before Peter betrayed Christ.

Ideally, Peter should have been filled with the Holy Spirit. But ‘ideal’ things rarely happen. It took Peter’s betrayal, followed by his sincere repentance to prepare him to be the first Pope.

And our merciful Lord too delights in a prodigal son, a repentant servant and merciful master. I am not justifying any action, what I am trying to drive home is that , we human beings look at issues as a part, but only the Saviour knows how the entire jigsaw comes together. One sad incident cannot nullify an entire life of service…Lets not be the judge and play God!

      • Hello Stanley, your inputs do bring a smile to me. Though you mention you are not justifying, in my opinion you are just doing the same.
Bishop Isidore has committed a religious blunder, and he should at least give a open apology. The decision taken by the Vatican is correct.
I also have a gut feeling that there is another force working within the administration of the catholic church.
Its hard to believe Bishop Isidore could have made a error of judgement.

    • dnishu says:

I agree with you…The only point is that why this happened? I cannot believe that Rev Bishop Isidore could have made a mistake like that. I really respect and love him.

  14. Croydon. says:

    Dear Stanley,
St Peters action was DENIAL and not BETRAYAL. Judas betrayed God. Bishop Isidore Fernandes has betrayed his office as a Bishop. Peter DENIED. I hope you dont write back saying’ Whether Peter DENIED or BETRAYED, it was him that Christ chose to lead the Church….’ as you have in the beginning of your last comment.
Also, you are lucky that it is me writing this reply and not St John Chrysostom, he would probably not be as pleasant. St John placed special emphasis on the fact that St Peter was a fisherman, whenever he got a chance to comment on the same. The whole idea is that God took a lowly, possible uneducated man, to lead His Church. So your opinion of whether St Peter being a fisherman or not does not matter, as one of the greatest figures in the Church thinks it matters very much.
Secondly you state that St Peter should have ideally been filled with the Holy Spirit… we all know that the first instance of receiving the Holy Spirit is found later in the Acts of the apostles. So are you stating that YOU assume that he was filled with the Holy Spirit when the Lord assigned him the task of leading the Church?
Eph 2:10 says that we are created IN CHRIST JESUS to do good works which God has prepared in ADVANCE for us to do that we should live in them. This means that our good works or service should be in Christ and they are NOT of our own as they have been prepared in advance by God. So, what are you crediting the Ex Bishops deeds/service to, the good works that God has prepared in advance or his own will?

  15. Thank you for publishing my expose.
I should have mentioned this in my expose: it struck me why for Rome the issue is a most serious one. A Catholic bishop may lay hands on a lay man and ordain him a priest only through the validity of the Apostolic Succession that is traced back to Jesus Christ and the apostles. It is possible for him to do that only by the authority vested in the successors of Peter. It is under the same authority that Bishops consecrate and install their fellow bishops. Bishop Isidore Fernandes’ acts were a gross violation of that.
    Michael Prabhu

  16. John Menezes says:

The disease Bishop Isidore Fernandes suffered from was inter-religious schizophrenia which has been described as “the abandonment of the religion given by God” in Mortalium Animos (1928) of H.H. Pope Pius XI. In these hours of trials we need to turn to the unambiguous teachings of the pre-Vatican Popes who have safeguarded the integrity of the Faith.

  17. I still fail to understand why the catholic church has yet not made a mention of this in any of our Catholic news papers or magazines.
At least they must explain this issue to the laity. why are they hiding?

  18. Croydon. says:

Dear Gordon. The various diocese in India probably work on the principle of ‘ You scratch my back, I scratch yours’, i.e. ‘ You hide my misdeeds, I hide yours’. Thats why no reports from any other newsletters.

    • Alphonsis Cardoza- Orlem Malad says:

Hello Mr Croydon, That is so very very true. Thats the reason we must demand transparency in the administration of the Catholic Church in India. You may not be aware, that many letters have been written to Our Dear Cardinal at The Archdiocese of Bombay on issues related to alleged financial matters, disposal of Church assets and properties, I have yet to hear from the said persons who have written the said letters about an investigation being done and read the results. So Sir when you use the phrase ” you scratch my back and I will scratch your” its seerms so very true.

  19. William K. says:

Dear Stanley, From the many explanations above, you should understand the seriousness of the issue. A bishop cannot lay hands on anyone as and when he wants to.

Are you comparing his sin with that of St. Peter or should you compare his sins with that of Judas. Here, more so, we are talking about norms and not just sins. God may forgive his sins and that is not for us to discuss. But as far the norms are concerned; this has to do with deposit of faith and here it concerns Apostolic succession, and Bishop Isidore is supposed to guard this deposit of faith with great care and pass it on to worthy men, as per the Canonical norms. It is not Rome that has punished him but he has imposed self excommunication by means of a prior norm; canon Law. By resigning he is acting responsibly and accepting the automatic excommunication.

Compare this with the heretical teachings of the Hierarchy in Mumbai: the laws and doctrines of the church are used and abused and they would not act responsibly nor will they resign. They maybe even defending themselves before the Vatican (Roman) dicasteries with falsified information and may have pocketed the Nuncio to favour them. Let the Church introduce RTI (Right to information) and see how all these lies can come out . For proof: some of these lies are also in the public domain and exposed on this blog.

On the other hand, the many here want to know why the Local church in Mumbai and in India has not announced this resignation of Bp. Isidore. I tell you, and from inside information, much of which is in the public domain, it could be to further their agenda: To have a woman priest soon in the Archdiocese. Why else are the heretic feminist who are demanding it entertained in the Archdiocese of Mumbai?

The exposure of Michael Prabhu seems to be a great set back to this INSIDIOUS agenda!

  20. Pingback: Allahabad bishop Isidore Fernandes “consecrates and installs” Protestant bishop |

  21. Abc says:

Father Isidore was one of the finest bishop/person i have come across. As a youth, we probably dont understant the rules and codes but the decision taken on him grieves us badly. It seems we are still stuck in rules and regulations than in following Jesus and His ways. Jesus never made any distinctions. Laying hands and blessing a protestant bishop, is this a crime??
The church will forever be divided till we have such codes which divides christians.

    Lord have mercy.

  22. Rudolf Lob says:

I fell on Bishop Isidore Fernandes’ feet literally but he was not moved though i had not committed any mistake or sin as for my conscience and as for my divine call but this Bishop never gave an ear to my heart breaking cry. this is the reward God gave him
