Can Yoga be practiced in the Church ?-Micheal Prabhu Catholic Apologist

Dear Fr Anand Muttungal,
1. Unless I am mistaken, you are the spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Bhopal, Father.
You are also the Public Relations Officer [PRO] of the Madhya Pradesh State’s Bishops’ Council.
[Please correct me if I am wrong.]
Therefore you fall into the category of a public person.
But it appears to me that you too have expressed your private opinion publicly in this essay.
Are you speaking in your capacity as the PRO and Spokesperson of the Madhya Pradesh Bishops and with the backing of magisterial authority?
2 a. I understand from the question in your sub-title that you agree that Harry Potter is evil.
In the sub-title and in the first paragraph of your essay, you question whether Fr. Gabriele Amorth is correct in saying that yoga too is evil (like Harry Potter).
It is. Fr. Gabriele Amorth is far from alone in his opinion.
2b. As for “Church has not subscribed to this view anywhere in the world“, Bishops’ conferences and Theological Commissions have; we also have the 1989 and 2003 Vatican Documents.

3. Fr. Gabriele Amorth is a deeply spiritual priest who is in the forefront of spiritual warfare against the very person of the devil at a time when many, even in Rome, do not even believe in the existence of Satan. He speaks from knowledge of Scripture and Tradition, personal experience,  as well as the experience of many canonised saints of the Catholic Church who had face to face encounters with/attacks by the minions of hell.
He does not have to be Eastern or Indian to understand that yoga is — for a Christian — evil; practising it is against the First Commandment, just as we don’t have to be Western to realize that Tarot card-reading is evil.
4. I dispute these statements of yours: “The practice of Yoga, Ayur Veda etc. are part of such eternal wisdom of this country. These are not part of the faith of any particular religion but practical application of the wisdom of this country.” All the evidence in my articles/compilations is to the contrary.
The basic philosophical assumptions of ayurvedic practice are closely linked with those of the discipline of yoga. They come from the same source, have common roots. They contradict Biblical revelation of the origin and nature of man, his purpose in life, and salvation [among othe things].

Subject: Is Yoga Evil like Harry Potter?

Can Public Persons Express Their Independent Thoughts?

(Is Yoga Evil like Harry Potter?)

By Fr. Anand Muttungal

As the importance of the media is increasing, the individual freedom is shrinking. The Church in India understands many of the customs, traditions, practices and certain knowledge as the common identity of the children of this country. Unlike anyone else Christians too take proud in being an Indian by sharing all its eternal wisdom. The practice of Yoga, Ayur Veda etc. are part of such eternal wisdom of this country. These are not part of the faith of any particular religion but practical application of the wisdom of this country. It is seen that the media looking for sensitive news, reports many views of the individuals who holds certain posts in the Western Church. Like the statements allegedly made by Father Gabriele Amorth, the official exorcist of Vatican, that “Practising yoga is Satanic, it leads to evil just like reading Harry Potter”. This view is completely personal and said to have spoken in a Film Festival while introducing a film based on exorcism.  Officially Church has not subscribed to this view anywhere in the world. So, should there be such a hue and cry? It made me to think about the personal freedom of the Individuals who are important office holders in organizations.

The opinions of people have to be seen from the point of individual growth. Perhaps the most important realization that an individual can make in their quest for personal growth is that there is no single formula that defines the path to personal success. We all have different goals and priorities, which means that different activities and attitudes will make us feel good about ourselves. We also have different natural strengths and weaknesses that are a part of our inherent personality type. It is very often seen that people expert pressure on the individuals to stop their individual opinions on various issues. It can stun the growth of the individual and the possibility of growth of the society.

The concept of a right relates to the freedom from interference by other individuals or organization or the governments. Individual rights refer to the liberties of each individual to pursue life and goals without interference from others. All individuals regardless of being part of system has the individual rights which include the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is above the oath taken to safe guard the interest of the organization or community because all actions of the community leaders and policy makers need not in concordance with the letter and spirit of the constitution. Leaders very often assume many powers apart from the written constitution and it wakens the organization if it is not brought to their notice. So individual has to have freedom to express views in an agreeable manner. It is for the interest of the community.

If we define the roles of each individual, it can be understood that each person is part of a larger community. It begins from family, neighbourhood, tribe, caste, village, town, city, state, region, country and the world form a larger community in the life of every human being. Individual plays different roles according to the demands. If the individual is restricted for selfish motives then the full human potential cannot be reached which is suicidal to the individual and the society at large.

Opinions of the important persons apart from the official views have to be seen as an effort to improve the society as a whole. Such opinions should be read and understood from a larger reality rather than from the individual glasses of who seemingly are affected directly by the opinions. Community responsibilities are an individual’s duties or obligations to the community but it should not hamper the possibilities of growth to the particular individual and the society as a whole.

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

  1. I dont see anything wrong with Yoga. I suffered from high BP and was a Chain Smoker and a diabetic.I learnt and continue to practice Yoga and I must make a public statement that I have given up smoking, my BP is under control and my diabaties is under control. No other spritual assistanec helpd me to overcome. Secndly during my practice training there was no “Mumbo Jumbo” or any thing spoken or discussed about any religion. I support Yoga.

  2. AJ says:

Thank you Bro.Michael for this lovely article. I am a fan of your work on your website and must say they are true to scripture and catholic teachings. If you may please excuse me while I add a little to you article.
Fr Gabriel Amorth has been very instrumental in the formation in the post councilar DOCUMENT of demonology. He draws his rationalism from practical experinces while standing true to the doctrines of the Catholic Church. Fr Anand Muttungal on the other hand is somebody with no known credentials to match those of Fr Amorth. Also in my opinion Fr Anand draws his rationalism from doctrines of the NON CATHOLIC faith. Moreover in my opinion Fr Anands rationalism accounts more for pluralism, the very evil the Vatican is striving hard to eradicate in India. I think alot more so called Corncerned Catholics must while dealing with the breaking of the sixth and seventh commandment, also concentrate a majority of their efforts on issues of breaking of the First commandment. FYI in reference to the practise of yoga being banned by the catholic church,(http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/interelg/documents/rc_pc_interelg_doc_20030203_new-age_en.html), the reason why Vatican while naming the document didnt call it a new age document or yoga document, is because they found it such a useless practise, that they decided to name it after the Lord himself.
So while persons. sadly boast they have been benefited by yoga, I hope their common sense makes them realise that when the devil lures you into his trap, he will not cause you pain and suffering immediately. He will make you beleive that all is going well.He is alot more smarter than the shrewdest man that ever lived on the face of this earth. But wisdom from God will make you realise that things may be a mess elsewhere. Such as a situation at home with you spouse and children.
So I urge many more catholics to stand up like Bro Michael Prabhu for ills against the first commandemnt first and then problems relating to the other commandents. Also the really concerned catholics must expose such priests such as Fr Anand to the vatican so that they remain true to the vocation they have opted to fullfill.

Can Yoga be practiced in the Church?
    ____________________________________
Can Catholics practice YOGA? Answer is “NO”
Fr. Gabriel Amorth statement is a great insult to some rebellious Indian Priests. Many Bishops and exorcist spoke against YOGA and even demonic possession due to YOGA. For example Australian news daily dated December 11, 2010.
    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/australians-turning-to-exorcisms-church-claims-harry-potter-and-new-age-spirituality-to-blame/story-e6freuzr-1225969292428
“Growth of non-Christian alternative relaxation techniques such as yoga and reiki, as well as forms of divination such as tarot cards, fortune-telling and seances, pose temptations that could invite demonic trouble.”
Words of Fr. Anand Muttungal are surely not inspired by God. Who appointed you to teach occult and lead seminarians and people unto satanic path? Philosophy of YOGA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldMDdGvZPwM

Yes there can be cure from YOGA, but the source is not from Jesus. It is extremely dangerous to our faith. Why Bishop is silent against these rebellious priests. Silence is nothing but support. We have to raise a voice to end up spiritual corruption in the church.

  5. Ralph Coelho says:

In a globalised world where the electronic media and public services spared ideas and concepts widely and indiscriminately it wood be wise to be careful about ones words and syntax.

One of the advantages of the modern world is the free access to information and the intrinsic power of human beings to think. It is inevitable that some will syncretism ideas and concepts as it is inevitable that some will jump the gun and read unintended ideas in the words carelessly written or deliberately reported to create sensational news.

Knowing his background I doubt that the report on Gabriel Amorth is completely true. Many would remember the hue and cry made by even good Catholics on the reports of the Regensburg Address – based on media reports.

All religions have developed techniques to still the mind and body to facilitate contemplation of the Creator. These techniques have many physical and psychological side-effect s that are tapped for other reasons. Yoga has a considerable bodily complement and the side-effects are on bodily functioning. Hindus use this to introduce concept about God and culture that are based on Hindu theology. It is equally possible to use the same physical state to introduce Christian or Catholic religious concepts.

Hence what is loosely reported as Yoga could be entirely legitimate. On the other hand one needs to be aware of the danger of going too much into the religious origins of the technique lest one gets insensibly and subtly drawn away from the truth. I believe this is what happened to Fr. Tony O’Malley. At one time his courses were mandatory for many religious to round them off. Now he has been notified, “To be read with caution” but still has many enthusiastic followers.

Harry Potter is a significant contribution in many ways and has particularly captured the imagination of children. I understand that it generates openness to suggestion and this is the danger. Rather than censor it is better that concerned persons educate people about this danger and even suggest their own positive messages.

That said it is increasingly necessary than the Church in India come out with its own teaching for the laity and institute controls on the religious in particular. It is disturbing to hear that congregations and church premises are being used and rented out for these classes. There are even reports of senor religious being experts in Reikii and Pranic healing!

  6. Francis S. Lobo says:

Every Baptist Catholic who supports and promotes YOGA and other new age practices are the agents of Devil and Hell.

  7. Francis S. Lobo says:

    YOGA
YOGA is a Hindu spiritual discipline that awakens the spiritual occult powers within self. That occult power is called Kundalini or serpent power. Yoga philosophy and postures are mutually interconnected and that can not be separated. There is no so called Christian YOGA. Through YOGA new agers invaded the Churches. It is a great threat to our faith. Yoga exercises copy nature and goddess. Many yoga poses can be traced to the shapes of creatures, such as the cobra, cat, dog, tortoise, crab and eagle. All YOGA posture are meant to arouse Kundalini(serpent power). I will explain below one of the YOGA posture
Bhujangasana – (Pose of the Serpent)
    http://www.yogamag.net/archives/1982/cmar82/bhuj1.shtml
Bhujangasana relieves muscular tensions and stiffness, stimulates the endocrine system and has many other important physical and psychological benefits. Even more important, though, are its psychic and spiritual effects. According to tantra, the practice of bhujangasana brings about fusion on all levels with one of the most universal manifestations of cosmic energy- kundalini, the serpent power.
In all traditions, the serpent represents the tremendous power latent within the individual. In Hindu mythology it is respected and honoured as a sacred animal, symbolizing the individual subtle force, intuition and wisdom. The double looped mathematical symbol for infinity is derived from the ancient symbol of the snake with its tail in its mouth, and is an expression of the continuity and eternity of life. By the practice of bhujangasana, we can realize and express not only all of the specific qualities of the serpent, but also its divine essence.

Yogi Baba Prem on Christian YOGA:
    http://yogibabaprem.sulekha.com/blog/post/2006/10/there-is-no-christian-yoga.htm
There is no Christian Yoga. One does need to be Hindu to practice yoga, but it is clear from historical evidence that Yoga comes from Hinduism.
    There is no Christian Yoga.
By Yogi Baba Prem, Vedavisharada, CYI, C.ay, C.va

It was quite astonishing to see on the flyer “Christian Yoga! This Thursday night….” I could feel the wheels spinning in my brain. “Christian Yoga”, I thought. Now while Christians can practice yoga, I am not aware of any Christian teachings about yoga. Yoga is not a Judeo/Christian word! It is not a part of the Roman Catholic teachings and certainly not a part of protestant teachings. It is not found within the King James Version of the bible. It is a Hindu word, or more correctly a Sanskrit word from the Vedic civilization. So how did we get “Christian Yoga”?

From this I could conclude that “Christian Yoga” could only indicate one of two possibilities:

    1) Christianity is threatened by yoga and is attempting to take over this system that is expanding and successfully teaching spirituality to the masses.
    2) Christianity is subconsciously attempting to return to the spiritual roots of civilization—the Vedic civilization.

I thought to myself, “why would they want to take over yoga?” Could it be due to the decline of members within the Christian church within the last 60 years? Is this an extensive marketing plan cooked up in some New York marketing guru’s head? Is it an attempt to water down the teachings of yoga and import their own teachings into the system? Or is it that they cannot stand not to own everything spiritual?

I think the best reason might be that yoga, and eastern spirituality, offered answers to the spiritual questions that the spiritually hungry masses had. It offered a practical, rational, logical, and truthful approach to spirituality. It did not contain any form of self-righteous condemnation, but offered love and acceptance to all. It did not prey upon victims with terms such as “Sin” and “eternal damnation”. But most importantly, it had answers! It offered a practical approach to cultivating a relationship with divinity. It offered a systematic approach and an abstract approach to meet the varying temperaments of the spirituality hungry.

The second possibility was that Christianity was itself looking for answers. Possibly the fundamentalist view, inflexibility, and condemnation was no longer fulfilling the needs of the masses or the leaders of the church. Offering yoga classes allowed the Christian to secretly practice Hinduism without having to renounce their Christian tradition.

Possibly by embracing the technology of yoga and meditation, the Christian church could finally return to the idea of love and acceptance that it believed it was founded upon. It is ironic that one religion would need to look to another religion to teach them about love, peace, harmony, and forgiveness. If successful, it could embrace these ancient teachings and save itself from what has been a steady decline in church attendence of the past few decades.

But possibly in their wisdom, the current fathers of the church realized that their time as a dominte religion was coming to a close. So within America they must absorb yoga before they are absorbed by it. This is a common religious view that has appeared numerous times within world history. Absorbing yoga would allow the church to more quickly move their resources to India. Taking over the country would allow them to own all the spirituality, and then ‘pick and chose’ which tasty spiritual treats they would share. After all they have 2000 years practice with this.

Indian being a loving, peaceful people, openly embraced their brothers from the west. They looked the other way as their temples were torn down. They accepted it as karma as their families were torn apart over differing religious beliefs. The Indians thought it was thoughtful of the missionaries to dress up just like swami’s, to be “just like them” and to share in their kindred spirit.

Modern day scholars from India frequently present the attitude of “let them have yoga, I am interested in protecting Hinduism.” I have heard this sentiment on numerous occasions, but the reality is that yoga is a part of Hinduism. Allowing one part to be taken from Hinduism opens a door for the distortion of the teachings. We must remember that the roots to modern day yoga comes from Vedic Yoga. The same Vedic Yoga that is the authority of Hinduism. Allowing one branch to be severed from the tree of knowledge will not necessarily kill that tree, but it can produce strain and have an unbalancing effect upon the tree.

Hinduism should reclaim its full heritage and not allow other groups to rename its sacred teachings under their banner, especially when they have no history of those teaching within their own system. If they wish to ‘borrow’ and say this comes from our brothers and sisters in Hinduism, then that is another thing. But frequently groups attempt to privatize the information and present themselves as the original authority. Hinduism should guard against its sacred traditions becoming distorted and taken away.

Scholars at universities should take the stand that yoga is part of Hinduism, though one is one required to be a Hindu to practice yoga. It is important to acknowledge the roots of the tradition; after all we are expected to give credit to the orginial sources within books and research papers, but yet Hindu scholars have ignored this fundamental western view when it comes to their own heritage.
One does need to be Hindu to practice yoga, but it is clear from historical evidence that Yoga comes from Hinduism.

Then he will try to control my children’s minds using ancient pagan tactics designed to free their minds from the so called stresses of modern living. Beware those of you who succumb to practices which claim to bring your mental state into a stage of oblivion in the name of meditation. Once you allow your mind to be controlled in this way Satan and his demons can move in so silently that you won’t realise it, so smooth will be the transition.

Avoid ancient spiritual practices including use of tarot cards

Many many souls in the world are starving for spiritual guidance. In their quest to bring meaning into their lives they are unwittingly allowing themselves be sucked into practices which amount to paganism. Any false dogma which entices you to believe that peace in your heart and soul can be achieved through ancient spiritual practices must be avoided at all times. Learn to recognise them for what they really are.

The use of crystals, meditation, reiki, yoga, tarot cards, belief in spirit guides, metaphysics and so called faith healers are there to entice you to believe in an alternative superiour existence outside of that created by God the Eternal Father.

    Warning about Ascended Masters

Many of you today who are constantly searching out spiritual comfort in the practice of following your angels must also be alert to the fact that once the term Ascended Masters is mentioned you can be sure that these angels do not come from Heaven. Ascended Masters, My children, are fallen angels and come from the dark. Yet you will be told and then be convinced that they come from the light. All of this pagan spiritualism, if you let it take over your lives, will eventually pull you downwards into the pits of darkness when you least expect it. Satan will be so careful as to how he presents these dark lies because at all times you will be told, and you will believe, that these things are all good.

Most of these practices are presented as being good for your self-esteem, confidence, control over your life – all of which is a lie. Not only do these practices drive you away from the truth but they bring untold misery once the evil spirits enter your soul as a direct result of these practices.

Bible warns of dangers of magic

The truth can never be tampered with. Teachings handed down to man in the Holy Bible warn mankind of the dangers of magic, fortune telling and the adulation of false Gods. In today’s world these practices are presented as harmless, but necessary, for your spiritual well-being. Because of the nature of gentle souls many of them will be naturally drawn to New Age Practices because of the false façade of the love they exude. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Warning about fanatical devotion to angels

Remember it is Satan and his fallen angels who have carefully and cunningly drawn you into these unsuspecting lies. For those of you who promote an almost fanatical devotion to Angels I have this to say. Why do you not proclaim the word of God, My Eternal Father first? Isn’t this obsession with Angels just another form of idolatry? Yes, by all means, pray for the help of the Holy Angels, however, always ask this question. Is your devotion to the Angels at the expense of your love for Jesus Christ, the Son of God or God, the Eternal Father? If so then you offend Me, your Divine Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Wake up now to the lies of so called spiritualism. The angels you attract by participating in such practices will not come from Heaven or from the light. They will seem to come from the light but that is the deceit that Satan and his demons use to cleverly camouflage their actions.

Remember one final lesson. Dress up your pagan practices as much as you like to appear as if you are paying homage to the Divine Light of Heaven but it will be a lie. The lie, and those you convince to follow this bizarre journey towards a so called spiritual realm outside that of My Father’s will bring you so close to Satan that beyond a certain point there will be no return.

The only Divine realm of love that exists outside of this earth is Heaven. Anything else you have been told is untrue. Satan, however, wants you to believe that there is. The reality is that he is pulling all those unsuspecting and superstitious souls into the darkness of Hell with him and all the fallen angels. All in the name of false love.

Please remember that love, true love, can only come from God, the Eternal Father.

    Your Loving Saviour Jesus Christ
