“Contain this within the community”

Some of the readers of this blog are of the opinion that while excellent work is being done these type of issues should be contained within the community.

We, wish to inform you that before any issue is put in the public domain letters are first sent to the Church Authorities ,since we too believe that these type of issues should first be thrashed out within the community. It is only when all these types of mediation fails that the letters are put up on the net and taken in the public domain. All the eggs in a basket are not rotten ,the rotten ones will have to be dealt with suitably….

We need persons like Gordon Jacobs who are willing to stick their necks out for free in order that Church Property is protected. We have seen a letter of Bishop Agnelo Gracias who instead of tacking the issue at hand has the temerity to comment about a persons grammar and who has challenged the said person to distribute leaflets and wear black bands and has called him in effective for not doing so.

For your information the Church has given land to build to a developer and has taken Rs.2000/- a sq. foot( carpet) in May 2008 when the going rate in Mahim is Rs.20,000/- per carpet foot(not built up area builders sell 0.6 of a carpet foot and call it built up) .The said spot which will have the proposed buildings is opposite Mahim Station. The residents have had meetings with Bishop Bosco Penha on 6th July 2009 and later in the same year with Cardinal Oswald Gracias and Fr.Dominc Savio Fernandes as the said multi storied building are proposed on spots which are shown as recreational gardens in the plans disclosed to purchasers of flats in the year 1995.None of the said 3 persons disclosed in the meetings held with them in the year 2009 that the said gardens no longer exist and money has been collected.

As per canon law no property above Rs.4,00,000/- can be alienated without the consent of the Archbishop. In Mumbai the Archbishop has a Finance Team which decides about the same. The Bishops and the Cardinal are on this Finance Team thus none of them can technically say that they are not aware of the deal.

If we keep quiet more and more things will be sold. The Church Authorities are merely custodians and we the laity are the owners.Property given by our fore fathers should not be misused and sold without the consent of the parish members.

If something has to protected and hence sold ,go ahead and sell it but before it is sold the laity should be informed by putting up notices in the church and the Examiner. When public announcements are made in the Church for all types of things including the meetings of Citispace on ” How Open Spaces are to be protected” ,Why is it that these sales are not publicised ?Why does the Examiner which is the official newspaper become unoffical for these announcements?

Its high time the laity of Mumbai wakes up otherwise the little that is remaining will also be lost.

Happy New Year

About The Voice Of Bombay's Catholic Laity

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

I have been keenly watching the reports and exchange as well as comments.
I salute you people from AOCC who have taken the bull by the horns. There is a lot of alleged corruption in the administration of the catholic Church. The big issue is the money received from the sale of church property, where does this all go? I have encouraged a few reporters to write about this so that the Govt of India can investigate.I am sure there is a leakage of these funds overseas and some local banks and a few individuals are involved. The higher ups in the church administration at no stage can say they were not aware. let the investigation begin.

Congrats once again to the team you have at th AOCC, they seem to be first class investigation professionals. However its sad that these issues could not have been contained within the catholic community. Any way its out so let the cleansing begin.

There is an age old saying dont wash your dirty linen in public,i stand by it but the higher ups are arrogant and roam around in expensive cars and officate at functions of the rich and famous, and behave like millionaries with some one elses money, some people have commented that their families are wealthy,if they are using their own money for their luxuries then it should be made public how much money their familes have donated to the church. The rot has to be cleared and the concerned clergy will have to be defrocked for misguiding the community and cases under section 420 of the indian penal code should be applied for prosecuting them.ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

    New Year Greetings.
I think I must be the first woman to respond and comment on this blog.I wonder why women are taking a back seat when it comes to these issues. Besides plunder of the property of Our Lord Jesus Christ, there are issues where a few clergy members are alleged involved even in sex scandles. Gone are the days where the priest was considered a man of God, today a priest is looked upon with suspicion, mistrust and doubt. The latest fear is with we women who also need to be careful as some of them are sexual peverts. What is very surprising there priests are permitted to continue to celebrate Holy Mass. In one of the cases know to me,I am told the priests defied the parish priest,Bishop and cardinal and nothing is done.
I believe this is injustice to the laity and the Cardinal and Bishops need to come clean on this issue.

    Dear Greg,
I have always advocated to go public as the church authorities take its people for granted. I have been following up with my local parish priests (two of them) at Sacred Heart Church Santa Cruz for the past year and four months, and there is nothing forthcoming from the side of the church. If the authorities underestimate the power of the people ( laity they need to have a taste of the same. I do understand there is a fairly large school of thought that we contain the problems and issues of the community within, yet if the church authorities prefer us to go public we must do so. I went public on the property issue at Santa Cruz, Roselands and will soon send a second issue. The first exposure has caused a lot of people to stand up and ask questions, the second due on 12 January is hoped to get more laity worried and the third some time early February will be the crowning Glory.
Sadly in the property cases at Roselands and Shanti Bhavan, both Church properities the plot was hatched within.

Hi Friends, Its been almost two and half months since I read the last feedback on the subject matter and have just returned from a short stint at sea.Its seems things have not changed a bit with the church authorities at Bombay. well we all know that the cardinal is a sick man and we dont expect much from him, its best he retires in grace rather than be saddled with all the rot. While the Bishops are in fact enjoying themselves and as i am told one of them being chief guest at International Woman day celebrated at bandra, its time that we now initiate a drive to ask them for accountability or drive them out and they are more a liability to the community than an asset. Its shameful to see a host of Bishops who are good for nothing pieces of decoration, using the money of the church to fly around in business class and drive around in AC cars and who live in aircondition confort when the people use Govt public transport, travel by NON AC trains and live under a fan the best they can afford. Let me tell you, the senior clergy have exploited and used the community for their confort and well being. This must stop immediately. This is now a appeal to come out and ask them for accountability.
