Portuguese church expulsion-over-property-row case gets moving

A criminal defamation suit filed by an expelled Portuguese Church trustee brought the archbishop’s representative to the church from 2001 to 2006, Rodney Murzello, and an ex officio parish council member, Sydney Mendoza, to the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Dadar yesterday to answer charges in the case.

With it the case, which has a property sell-off row at the root of it, seems to be finally moving ahead.

Judith Monteiro filed the case after she was accused of siphoning off church school funds and expelled without inquiry.

She said this happened after her 2003 refusal to sign papers that would enable illegal sale of property belonging to the Dadar (West) church, formally called Our Lady of Salvation Church.

She said the then church trustee and parish priest Father Vernon Aguiar had asked her to sign the papers.

“By not signing, I upheld a court order, ensured we didn’t go back to sole trusteeship, and avoided things like the Marinagar property row,” said Monteiro. “I safeguarded parish property.”

The allegation of siphoning off funds was later rubbished by the Our Lady of Salvation School authorities.

Bombay Laity Ezekiel’s Chapter 3 Task as Watchman 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.
